statscloud

Introduction

How to get started with StatsCloud

Overview

statscloud is a modern, cross-platform statistics package that runs on all devices (phones, tablets, laptops, desktops and Chromebooks). You can start a new project in statscloud at any time just by visiting https://statscloud.app/new

You can also install statscloud as an app on your device. To do so, just visit https://statscloud.app using a modern browser (e.g., Edge or Chrome) and click 'install' in the top right corner. The app will then be installed on your device and appear like any other piece of software; it will function offline, associate itself with files on your device, and update itself automatically.

The interface

statscloud was designed to have a fresh, modern interface that is simple to use and provides a quick and convenient way to run statstical analyses. Because the app was built to work across different devices, the interface changes according to the device you're using or the size of your browser window.

Opening projects

As well as creating new projects, you can import projects from a range of files, including those from other statistics packages. Simply click 'Import Project' from the home dashboard, or click 'Import' once you're in a new project.

Data Organising

statscloud comes with all the data editing tools you'd expect from a stats package. You can sort your data, find and replace values, and insert rows and columns. You can also hide variables (make them disappear from your dataset without deleting them), lock them (stop them from being edited accidentally), or even split the data by a category label. You can also group your variables and colour-code them to help keep everything organised.

Related Conditions

statscloud has a revolutionary new way of defining columns that are part of a repeated measures design. Instead of declaring your column names individually and giving them long names (e.g. "confidence_smart_sitting"), you can nest them all under one variable. Not only does this make your dataset much easier to read, it allows you to run analyses with them much more easily (without a complicated condition / level assignment process).

Form view

statscloud recognises the importance of using a statistics app on a touch device, so it has a touch-friendly Form view to make data entry much easier.

Data Reshaping

statscloud also has data reshaping tools: You can switch between wide and long data formats easily by using the simple toggle switch. If statscloud detects that your dataset uses a repeated measures design when you're importing it, it will give you the option to nest these columns as related conditions.

Data Summaries

statscloud produces a data summary of each of your columns for you on the Data tab so you can get an overview of your data before you run any analyses. The warning symbols make it really easy to spot any issues (e.g. missing values or data normality violations) so you're always aware of them.

Filters

Adding filters to your dataset is very easy to do. statscloud has a simple and touch-friendly Filters tab that allows you to exclude or include rows based on a set criteria. These filter your rows live as they change, and you can switch them on and off easily from the number column.

Running Analyses

statscloud has a modern approach to running statistical analyses. Instead of requiring you to navigate through lots of options and tick-boxes, you simply select the predictor and outcome variables for your test design and statscloud will run the most appropriate test for you with that design. As standard, statscloud runs reliability checks on all your tests and summarises everything for you in an interactive output.

statscloud also supports both frequentist and Bayesian analyses, and does so through either its own lightweight statistics package (statscloud.js), Python, or R. If there are any analyses that you require that are missing, you can request them or use the Python and R terminals built into the app to run them.

Interpreting Analyses

The outputs in statscloud are summarised in plain English so they are easy to interpret for everyone. The output gives you a summary of the test result, a chart to represent your data visually, a reliability report, and it even provides an APA-formatted text summary for you too.

Editing Analyses

The analysis outputs generated by statscloud are completely interactive, so you can toggle the type of test run (e.g. you can switch between a Welch t-Test or a Mann-Whitney U test), the alpha level, the hypothesis type, and the type of post-hoc test. When you change any of these, the output changes for you dynamically.

Live formulas

One of the most powerful features of statscloud is that it can show you the formula it used to calculate any statistic in your analysis. By simply clicking the value in the summary table, you can view the formula populated with values. This provides a very useful way of showing your working in teaching resources or research articles.

Assumption checking

statscloud has an intuitive new assumption checker built into the app. Whenever you run a analysis, statscloud will allow you to go through the assumptions yourself manually to see if they have all been met. For each assumption, statscloud walks you through the process and explains what criteria needs to be met in order for it to be accepted. Some assumption checks can also be checked automatically too.

Charts

statscloud has some powerful chart editing tools built into it. The app uses the D3.js charting library to create interactive and customisable charts. You can pick a style and edit the appearance of your charts, using a very simple and intuitive interface, and save them as a high-quality image (or vector) file whenever you're ready.

Code

statscloud recognises the need to learn a programming language (e.g. R, Python, Julia) for those who wish to become professional researchers. To help teach users how to use the language, the Code tab exposes all the code you need and annotates every line so you can see exactly what it does. You can browse the code at any stage throughout your project (after declaring data or after having run several analyses) and download the code in a file as soon as you're ready to migrate.

Sharing projects

If you want to share your project, you can generate a link to your project by simply clicking the Share button. You can decide exactly what you'd like to share (just the project with dataset populated, a template of a project, or the full project with data and analyses completed). These links can be opened by anybody on any device without requiring any software to be downloaded or installed.

Saving projects

As statscloud is a web app, there's no need to save project files. However, you can save your data file at any time from the Data tab, and save all the code to reproduce your project in an Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

PRO users can log in and save their projects to a dashboard so they can access these at any time on any device. For more information on PRO accounts, visit the Products page.
